Why the True Power of iOS7 Wasn’t Shown at WWDC
ORIGINALLY POSTED TO MEDIUM Update: As predicted we have a new operating system but I do not believe we have seen the real power of iOS7. I still believe the real integration between the hardware and software will be seen this fall with the release of the next iPhone.
—————
Tomorrow, Apple will (most likely) unveil a brand spanking new mobile operating system. No one really knows anything about their announcement because Apple has “doubled down” on privacy and leaks are in short supply.
Tomorrow, designers, journalists, pundits, Apple-fans and Android trolls will either ‘love it’ or ‘hate it.’ According to Gruber’s sources it will be “polarizing”.
Tomorrow, we will (most likely) see a further convergence of both the look and feel of OSX and iOS7 along with closer ties of the operating systems services.
And yet, tomorrow, none of this will matter, because, to Apple, it is the OS, services, software, and hardware combined that is the ultimate Apple experience.
- We will have the OS in both OSX and iOS flavors.
- They will debut a new service or access to services. (Siri access please?)
- They will showcase some new user software (maybe).
- They will debut new MacPro hardware. Not the new iPhone.
It is the last point that will leave us wanting more. I suspect Ive’s impact will be felt far beyond just the “look and feel” of the OS and be a deep dive into how it interacts with the hardware itself. But history has shown us that the iPhone is a fall affair, and without the hardware of the next iPhone there will be a knowledge gap of how exactly the OS will interact with it.
Tomorrow, I don’t believe we will see that interaction.
